a little bit about what's here

Welcome to my brains dump station. Please don't feel obligated to read it but if you are here it's because you expressed an interest in being here or I just happen to think you're rad and want to include you in our life. Feel free to comment so that I know if anyone is reading! Not that it would stop me from blogging if no one did read, it's just nice to know who is around every once in awhile! I'll try to hit spell check before I post but I make no guarantee's! It's my blog and therefore you will find that I don't censor myself very often, especially when it comes to swear words (I'm working on it). If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to not read. I'm okay with that.

I love being a work from home mom to my one and only child, G. He is a dream that I never thought would come true. It's my goal in my life to raise him to be thoughtful, witty, respectful, gentle, sincere, creative, determined, instinctive, charming, frank, truculent, faithful, reflective, happy, active, bright, ambitious, talented, productive, decisive, kind hearted, friendly, proud, sarcastic, calm, righteous, generous, protective, dynamic, silly, adaptable, brave, honorable, gregarious, funny, fearless, outgoing, magnanimous, confident, cultured, fair and just plain amazing. It's not too tall an order, it's my life's work.

The crib...

We decided the other day that it was time to lower the crib mattress, before G starts to pull himself up and takes a tumble out the front of his crib. Well he's so tall that we realized that we had to drop the mattress to the 2nd to the last hole! And we had to raise the front panel up. Now I can't reach but he'll be safe. I need to have Ed build me a step stool or something because when I go to put G in his crib my boobs get crushed and when I go to get him out of his crib I wrench my back every time. Once he starts pulling himself up consistently then it won't be so bad, but for now he's content to just lay on his back and wait for me to pick him up. Argh!

G and his daddy had a good day yesterday, they wathced football and played. When I got home from work at 7:30 pm, I ate some quick dinner and then fed G. He crashed like a guy who had run a marathon all day! :) I know I'm weird but I kinda love that he does that for me. He woke up for a short time at about 10 pm but I was able to use my super powers to get him to go back to sleep. He slept until about 5:30 am!!! Woohoo!!! I think he only woke up because he's such a restless sleeper that he kicked his blanket off and got a little chilly. If we dress him in long sleeved and legged pajamas he sweats like crazy and wakes up in a pool of sweat. If we dress him in a onsie he won't leave his blanket on and he gets cold. Anyway, he slept after that until almost 7:30 am.

I'm not bragging completely because the night before was a different scenario. He went to be just fine at around 7:30 to 8 pm, but he was up at 3 am and ready to party like it was 1999. I could not get him back to sleep to save my life and I got a little frustrated because I had to work the next morning. I finally gave up and laid him in his crib and gave him a toy to wrestle with and I went back to bed. He stayed up for another hour or so chattering and giggling and such. The next thing I know my alarm is going off and waking us all up at about 8 am!

So, the sleeping in his crib thing is still going well!!! Now if only I could get Ed to put G in his crib for naps during the day - we'd be about set!!!

G's first Christmas!!!

Happy 6 months Son!

Christmas Eve marks 6 months from when Garrett was born. I cannot believe my life. A year and a half ago I never thought that I would be someone's mom. The struggle to get pregnant helped to make me appreciate and enjoy it that much more.

Now that he's here and has completely consumed my life I realize that I never truly lived before now. I look forward to every part of every day. When he wakes me up at 2 am and I get to rock him and feed him I hold him and wonder how I got so lucky. When he wakes up in the morning with a big grin I can't help but grin back, even though I'm so tired that I can't see straight. Everything he does, he does with his whole heart and the sense of wonderment amazes me. He is a work of God's art!!!
And now I get to see Ed as a man that is different than the man I married. I loved the man I married, but I'm head over heels in love with the man I now know. Garrett is truly my greatest joy and accomplishment. I could come up with a cure for cancer tomorrow and I would still be more proud of the fact that I'm a parent.

For your viewing pleasure! :)

When we were in Coeur d'Alene for Thanksgiving my Mom, sister and I took G over to Kiddie Kandids at the Spokane Valley Mall. Here are the pictures we got from that visit.

Our online Christmas letter

I apologize for only sending out cards and not my traditional "here's what we did this year" letter, but let's let this serve as that, since I wrote our blog address on the backs of the cards we sent out. Did you enjoy the cards? They were fun this year huh? So many years I have received cards from people showing off their little ones - and I'm so happy to get to join the club!!!

A recap of highlights from our very exciting 2008!!!

January
01/14 - Ed had a birthday! I won't tell you which though, lest he read this and feel like kicking me in the booty for admitting his age to anyone.

01/25 - As a late birthday present for Ed as he found out he was having another son. :) He was the only person who "knew" that we were having a boy, everyone else (including me) thought for sure we'd be buying pink for a long time to come. We went to our OB appointment and Garrett was sure to let us know that he was packing a twig and some berries so there was no doubt!!! I knew then that I was destined to lead a life of camo!

March
In March we got to visit with the perinatologist for the first time, and we were very very very excited to hear and see that Garrett appeared to not have OI. What a huge relief for both of us. Sure, we would have been fine if he did have it, and we would have adapted, but parents of kids with OI have to make so many tough decisions related to their children's well-being and we were scared to have to do it. The perinatologist felt fairly certain that Garrett was safe. I relaxed and enjoyed my pregnancy so much more after that appointment.

03/15 - We decided to name our baby Garrett Edward. It was narrowed down to that and Broden Edward but looking back, Garrett was the right choice!!! I can't imagine calling him Brody now, even though it is, of course, a name near and dear to my heart. I posted a poll online about it, and Broden was the clear winner, and we all know I am forever going for the underdog!!!

April
04/02 - My Dad, Mom, and little sister came to visit!!! They said they wanted to see Fat Cyndi. Boy did they get to - but if they were smart they would have waited until about the middle of June. I was really Fat Cyndi then! :) On 04/02 we all went and I had a 3d ultrasound done. It was so cool to watch Garrett and be able to feel him at the same time!!! Ed was in Boise for training so he missed out on the fun, but I had pictures and video to show him when he got home. My Mom, sister and I also started on the nursery.

In April we purchased our camp trailer. What a great investment that has been so far - I look forward to many years of enjoying the outdoors with my two Davey Crocketts! :)

04/15 - The Braxton Hicks contractions started. Ugh. Consider them practice contractions my doctor tells me. Who wants to start practicing a couple of months ahead of the event? I'm a procrastinator thru and thru!

04/20 - Ed broke his kneecap chasing down a bad guy on a traffic stop. Don't you worry about Corporal Holbert - he was back on duty two weeks later, broken kneecap and all. He considered it his trial run to see if he would go stir crazy taking 7 weeks of paternity in the summer. He was on light duty for a very short amount of time before deciding that he'd had enough and so he proved to the doctor that he could still leap tall buildings in a single bound, so they released him to full duty. It was during this time that he regreted that we live in a split level house though!

May
05/12 - Happy 30th birthday to me - I was 33 weeks pregnant!!! I worked that day, then Ed made me a nice dinner. The day before was Mother's Day and even though technically I wasn't a mother Ed decided it was my first real Mother's Day and he treated me like a queen both days!

In May we got word from the Captain in Region 2 that Ed was chosen to be the resident trooper in Powell! This is a remote residency that is located on Highway 12 right along the Lochsa River. It will put us a LOT closer to home, which we're very excited about. We will be moving in April of 2009 as Ed has to be on duty on 05/01/09. The state provides the house (so we will not have to pay a mortgage) and pays the utilities, etc...we just have to pay for our satellite TV and internet (unless of course we can bring ourselves to use dial-up, which isn't going to happen). We have to commit to three years there, and we can do two tours, so we're planning on being there for six years. I will get to homeschool Garrett for the first few years, which I'm very excited about. I am also excited at the prospect of getting to finish my Master's without having to try and fit it into a 40 hour work week (amongst other obligations). It is truly God's country up there and it is perfect for mountain man Ed. Now...the question is when do we list our house, with who, and for how much???

June
06/01 - My friend Jolynn threw me a baby shower. It was so sweet!!! :) What great people we've gotten to know down here! We were gifted with so many clothes that I basically didn't have to do any laundry for the first 3 weeks of Garrett's life.

06/05 - Garrett decided that he wanted to try to come early but we were able to make him understand that that wasn't an option! I spent a day in the maternity ward of the hospital with some kind of virus that zapped all of the hydration out of my body, which caused my uterus to start contracting. They pumped me full of IV fluids and the contractions slowed down, but never did go away, until I gave birth anyway.

06/24 - Garrett Edward made his debut via scheduled c-section at 7:30 am. He weighed in at 7 pounds and 10 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He had a beautiful head of dark hair and the sweetest disposition, right from the start! He latched on and began breastfeeding like he'd been doing it all his life!!! I couldn't believe the time had come to meet my son. I didn't want Ed to spend the night at the hospital since the "beds" they have there for the dads are less than comfortable, and besides, we had dogs at home he needed to take care of. Garrett roomed in with me the whole time, even though it was against hospital policy for a c-section momma with no one else sleeping in the room to have the baby with her. Too bad! He's my baby so I make the rules!!! I do have to brag that for some reason we got to have one of the two maternity "suites" in the hospital. The normal maternity rooms are TINY and somehow I lucked out and didn't get one of those, not that we needed a whole lot of room in there anyway, seeing as we didn't have family coming in and out visiting. We did have a lot of friends who stopped by to welcome our little miracle child!

06/26 - Garrett and I came home from the hospital!!! I was awfully sore from the c-section but I listened to the advice of my friend Kim and I made sure to get up and move as much as possible, even though it was painful to do so. The worst part by far was the stairs. OUCH. You should have seen Ed taking care of me and Garrett!

We were very fortunate to have my Mom come down for a little over a week after Garrett was born. She came down on 06/26, which was my request because I could not see a reason for her to be here while Garrett and I were just in the hospital. She was such a big help that we were sad to see her go!!! From that moment on Garrett fell in love with his Grandma!!!

July
07/12 - We packed up all the baby necessities (holy crap that's a job), the dogs, hooked up to the trailer and started towards Coeur d'Alene. Yes, we travelled 500+ miles with a 18 day old child. He was a GREAT traveler and he truly slept most of the way there. We stopped in Salmon the first night and stayed with friends there. Then we stopped in Powell the next night at what will eventually be our new home (to check things out), then we were in Coeur d'Alene. The air conditioner in our truck went out sometime during this trip and it was miserable to drive without it on. Poor Garrett had to travel in a plain white onsie lest he bake in the back seat! We got to see a lot of family and friends and we spent two weeks up there! We lived in Mom & Dad's backyard in our camp trailer. It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were so sad to take Garrett away from people that love him so much but we were happy to go home and really settle into being a little family of 3 (plus 2 mutts).

August
We started out August by hooking back up to the camp trailer just days after we returned from Coeur d'Alene. We intended to camp at a place called Warm River here in Idaho, but it was packed and we had to find another campground. We ended up at Lower Mesa Falls. It was just the three of us and the dogs. We only got to be there for a few days, but we had a great time. We took Garrett on lots of stroller rides and we did our best to protect him from the mosquitoes! We were happy to get to see a part of Idaho that we haven't seen yet. :) We sat around and ate and stared at the fire. It was heaven!

When Ed got back to work from his 7 weeks of paternity leave he had a new present waiting for him - a Dodge Magnum. That's right, he had to trade in his beloved go fast machine (i.e. the Charger) for a giant station wagon patrol car. He's none too happy about that but he reminds himself it's just until we get to Powell, then he gets a 4 wheel drive!

08/16 - Ed and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary!!! It appears that some of you were wrong and we have managed to still like each other! My boss took Garrett for a few hours so that Ed and I could go have a drink (a small one for me of course) and some steak. :) The funny part is - we couldn't get back to pick up Garrett fast enough. We missed our little buddy!

08/31 - I returned to work full-time :( It was sooner than I expected but I ran out of leave and we couldn't really afford to go without my pay, so I had to go back to work.

September
09/02 - I bought a new car, what some call a mommymobile. But don't worry - it's not a mini-van. :) I was already tired of lugging Garrett in and out of our big Ford pickup. My new mommymobile is so much more kid and car seat friendly!!!

09/14 - Garrett and I took a road trip to Boise for a few days so that he could meet his Uncle John, Aunt Heather and cousins Ben and Keith!

In the month of September Garrett also got his first cold :( Poor kiddo had a hard time with it too, but he remained his usual happy self throughout it all!!! He's since had several more colds but we've worked thru each of them the best we could.

November
11/11 - Garrett's got two teeth!!! (watch out boobies - here comes the pain)!

During the month of November Garrett learned how much fun it is to roll everywhere! He's a rolling fool now!!! We also started feeding him rice cereal, then fruits, and then veggies. Now he'll eat as much of whatever we give him! So, our next big adventure is Stage 2 foods eventually, but first we need to do some creative babyproofing against Rolly McRollerson!

We were fortunate enough to have the time to take to go to Coeur d'Alene for the Thanksgiving holiday. We were up there for 6 whole days even! We had a nice small Thanksgiving dinner (complete with Ed's beloved smoked turkey) with my parents and sister. While we were there Garrett was baptised at the church that I grew up in. His godparents (or sponsors) are my sister Sarah and Ed's oldest son James. That's when we got to meet James' new family and wife. Welcome to the family Christina and kids!!!

December
12/01 - I started back to school after a six month break. I wanted a longer break but I had to go back or I would have to start paying back the financial aid I have accrued, which is a frightening amount of $$. Balancing work, school, baby, husband, housework, etc...is no easy task, and I wouldn't say I'm anywhere close to successful at it, but it's not for forever, so I can do it.

12/12 - We decided it was time to move Garrett into his own bed (i.e. the crib in his room). He sleeps so much better and so do I. I miss snuggling him all night though, and I miss just being able to have him root for booby in the middle of the night. Now I have to get up and go into his room, but I'm enjoying sitting in the rocking chair with him while he east in the dark until he goes back to sleep. I sit there and think of what my life was like a year ago at that time and I'm amazed at how much my life has changed. This little boy relies on me for everything and it's a repsonsiblity that I am so honored to have!!!

*******************
As you can see, what a year 2008 has been at the Holbert house. We welcomed Garrett and we found out that we will be moving. We've loved our time in Pocatello and we are so grateful to those that welcomed us as family. We will miss our first house together and we will each miss the people we work with. We have come to find out that our son is the most amazing creature God ever created and we look forward to raising him to be an intelligent, respectful, sensitive and precocious child. Our marriage has been strengthened as we see each other in a new light and we get to work together towards a long-term goal. Our little family of just the two of us has blossomed in the coolest way, and for those of you wondering - our family is complete! :) We decided that we truly won the genetic lottery with this little boy and neither of us are big gamblers. :)

From our house to yours - Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

6 month checkup & his milestones

G weighs in at 18 pounds 14 ounces & he's 29.5 inches tall!!! He's in the 77th % for weight and the 95th % for weight. That's according to an online tool that I use to keep track of him http://www.mybirthcare.com/favorites/babygrowthchart.asp but according to the doctors office he's over 80% for weight and over 100% for height. I don't care about the % - I care that he's a healthy and happy little big boy!!!

And his milestones:
rolls from tummy to back
rolls from back to tummy (in fact he rolls all around the house)
moves things from one hand to the other and back again
sits up with our help
stands up with our help
has 2 teeth (with a third one pushing thru)
pushes himself up on his arms and knees, but not going forward or back
pulls things to his mouth
reaches for things he wants
chatters a lot - but no discernable sounds (yet)
laughs and smiles in reaction to us
recognizes his name
takes binky of his mouth and puts it back in (if he wants it)
solid foods (rice cereal, fruits and veggies)

The doctor said he would be very surprised if G's not walking (he tries to take steps with our help of course) by about 10 months old.

Cell phone pics

dang!

I was hoping to have a picture to post of my beautiful brace-free smile. But they didn't come off today. Dangit!!! I have another appointment in 4 weeks and I stand a really good chance of getting them off then. A girl can hope!!! 02/01/09 marks my 3 year brace face anniversary.

He did it!!!

Not last night, but the night before last....G SLEPT THRU THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It might have been just a fluke - but my heck it was cool!!! He went to sleep at about 10:30 pm and didn't stir until 6:45 am. When I heard him on the monitor (waking me up) and then looked at the clock I was flabbergasted!!! Last night he did pretty good too, he went down at about 10:30 pm again and only woke up for booby at 3 am, then he was up for the day at about 7:45 am! Holy cow this is good stuff!!!

If the crib is a rockin'...

Last night was night #4 of G sleeping in his crib in his room. I still miss him like crazy, but unfortunately it really does seem to be better for the two of us (Mommy and G). Last night was a great night, but worrisome at the same time because he slept like a champ. G is sick (yes, again) and he didn't have much at all to eat all day, which is very unlike our little booby monger.

He had his booby around 7 pm and he was fast asleep by 7:30. At about 9 pm he hadn't woken up still so I moved him into his crib in his room. Ed and I went to sleep at about 11 pm, and we still hadn't heard a peep from G. I slept fitfully because I am not used to him sleeping for such an extended amount of time. I'm lucky to get 4 hours between feedings with him at night. Finally at about 2:20 am I heard him stirring and blowing raspberries. I got up and went to his room, picked him up and loved on him (you know, to keep the cold perpetuating) and then we sat down in the rocker and had some booby. He kept trying to wake up to play but I kept gently redirecting him to a calm and quiet state so that he would fall back asleep. After just less than an hour I was able to lay him back in his bed and go back to mine.

I woke up for work at 6 am, and realized that I hadn't heard a peep out him again still. Ed woke up and said, "Wow did he sleep all night?" Yeah right, I wish. Must be nice to get to sleep through it huh? :) I guess that is one of the very few pitfalls of being a booby momma, that job is mine and mine alone. Anyway, I went into his room and checked on him and he was sleeping soundly still. I was able to shower and get dressed for work before he woke up again. I brought him into Ed and I fed him again. He fell right back asleep with his Daddy. I was quite proud of myself and hoped he would sleep awhile longer since Ed has to work night shift tonight, but I have since found out that he was awake before I even pulled out of the driveway.

So, I will continue to put him in his crib at night, but I probably won't stop missing him for awhile still.

A little Christmas spirit!

I met a woman online in a mommy group. Her husband works in construction, and we all know that with the economy, that can't be a good job. She was worried because they don't have much extra $$$ and she wanted her kids to have a good Christmas, of course. They moved within the last year and they weren't able to take all their stuff with them when they moved, so they had pretty much nothing for Christmas. I went thru all our Christmas stuff and with the exception of a few things (i.e. my nativity set, a few gifts from family, and all of our ornaments) I erradicated our Christmas decor (our tree, garland, lights, nutcrackers, stockings, stocking holders, plus rolls of unused wrapping paper, bows, etc...) and gave it all to her family.

She sent pictures since they decorated today (I was just able to get it all to her yesterday) and it makes my Christmas this year that we were able to do that. We didn't spend any money, we just passed on what we had that wasn't getting used anyway, and it makes for less stuff that we would have to pack in the spring.

See, even in what people think are dismal times we can still do nice things for and take care of each other's spirits. :)

Happy Holidays to me!!!

Sweet potato face!!!

So far away...

G and I aren't getting very good sleep lately, we seem to be playing off of each other's bad habits. So, since I am on day shift now and go to bed (well I try to) at a decent hour, I decided maybe it's time to try G out in his crib in his own room. I have been waking him up at night when I stay up and do homework, and Ed has woken him up here and there when he comes home at 2 am.

G fell asleep on the booby at about 8:30 last night and I put him in his crib, which makes him look so teeny tiny again. I put the monitor on and walked away. That was HARD! Seriously, stop laughing at me. Every little noise he made I went running for, and man oh man did I miss getting to look over at his beautiful face whenever I wanted to! I swear he made every strange noise he's ever made - all in a row last night.

He woke up for booby around 2:30 am, which is totally normal for him. I went into his room and sat in the rocking chair and fed him. When he fell back asleep I put him back in his bed and went back to my room, passing out on my bed. I was wrong. He wasn't asleep. Ten minutes later he wakes me up again, yelling on the monitor. I went in and found him on his tummy so I rolled him back over and gave him a binky and waited until I heard deep breathing, the whole while laying my head on the crib rail because I was SO dang tired. When I heard the breathing and he stopped sucking on his binky I crawled back into my bed. Five minutes later he's blowing raspberries and giggling. So we're looking at about 3:00 am by now.

I got out of my bed again, looked out the window and wondered where in the hell Ed was (he was supposed to be off at 2 am), grabbed G out of his crib and laid down with him in my bed, giving him free range booby. He would not go back to sleep!!! I was ready to cry and I kept telling him (be forewarned...bad mommy moment here), "Listen you little shit, go to sleep! Why are you being mean to Mommy? No, I don't want to play - I want to sleep!" He didn't listen. Ed came hom at about 3:20 and he took G upstairs for me so that I could sleep before coming to work this morning.

So not only am I tired, but now Ed's got G to himself all day while I'm at work, and Ed's working on even less sleep than I am! Oh - and it appears that G has another (yes another) cold coming on!!! ARGH!

But guess what? I'm going to put him in his crib again tonight. Aren't you proud of me? Those few hours I got between when I stopped doing homework and when he woke up were great!!! But I sure do miss having my little boy close by. He's been "by" me for over a year now when I think about it, and I've enjoyed every second of it.

A typical day here...

I'm at work, just minding my own business the other day. Working away. No, really, it's true - I know how to do work sometimes! And I get this email from Ed titled "OMG" (disclaimer do not read further if you don't find poop funny at all):

From: Ed Holbert [mailto:e****@c*******.net] Sent: Tuesday, December 09, 2008 11:45 AMTo: Holbert, CyndiSubject: OMG

Yours son just put out one of the biggest poops I have ever seen. Went to change his diaper and there was a small amount in there. Before I was done cleaning him off, he let rip a monster, I swear I went thru 10 of the wipes just trying to catch it all. Just when I thought it was done he would push out another long line of crap. I can guarantee he is not constipated at all.

He is happy as a clam now…….going to take him down and get him dressed since he pushed so hard to get everything out that he whizzed all over himself too.

Yup, this is my life, ain't it great??? I'm just glad it was Ed and not me!!!

G versus the bowl full of jelly (as if he's not packing his own?)

The picture kind of explains it all don't you think? I figured it was a rite of passage and I thought I'd try to do it when he's in a stage where he wasn't likely to scream his head off at Santa. I was right, no crying going on here.

Poor Santa must be so abused though...see the blue blanket on Santa's right knee? He told me "Okay, you stand right there so he can still see you, and give me his comfort blankey in case he cries." I tell him, "It's okay Santa, he's not a crier." Santa gave me a dubious look. "No, really I tell him." Of course I was right and G didn't cry.

Then Santa said to me, "What a joy. He can just stay here with me! I'll keep him for awhile" Uh, no Santa, you might be a dirty old man ... Mommy has one of those at home already, thanks.

To Grandmother's house we go...!

Over the river and thru the woods...

We watched gas prices dropping with sweet anticipation that maybe it wouldn't cost us $750 in gas to travel to Coeur d'Alene, as it did this summer when it was about $4.15/gallon. Sure, we weren't going to be pulling a camp trailer this time, but even if we hadn't taken the camp trailer with us this summer we still would have spent over $500 just in gas alone. Imagine our utter delight when we fueled up at about $1.65/gallon when we left. Who knew we'd be excited about $1.65/gallon?!?

We stayed up packing on Monday 11/24 until midnight. G was kind enough to stay up with us that whole time too. We finally went to bed and at about 3:45 am G woke up for his middle of the night booby. That woke Ed up, and he decided that it was time to get up and get on the road anyway. We hit the freeway at about 6 am. G slept pretty much the whole trip, which was great. I need to remember to tire him out and then leave early in the morning! The drive went fast and we were in Hayden by the time my Mom got off of work at 1:30 pm. My Mom took over with G, as I suspected she might do! We had told them to expect us on Wednesday, so they were surprised to see us a day early. Sarah knew we were going to be there early but she kept it a secret. Ed and I struggled to stay awake before collapsing into bed much much later that night. It felt so good to be "home"!!!

The next few days were filled with visits with Ed's family and some friends in the Silver Valley. We did some shopping (c'mon you know I have to!) and otherwise we just hung out around my parents house. It was wonderfully relaxing. I was just exicted to get to introduce my parents and sister to the little boy that is the G Man. He has changed SO much from the newborn they had last seen at 5 weeks old. He spent lots of time laughing and giggling (at my dad) and he wore Grandma out at every opportunity.

One highlight in particular was when Ed's son James and his new family came over to visit (after G's baptism). James got married to a woman named Christina on Saturday (either 11/15 or 11/22). Christina has 5 kids of her own so Alexus (James' daughter) finally has plenty of playmates. James, Christina, Alexus, Eric, Auggie, and Nikki came over to my parents house. The dogs were completely enamored with all the kids and the attention and play they got from them. The house was noisy and bustling for a few hours while they were there. I can hardly wait until I get to watch G playing with his nieces/nephews (since we're expecting at least one more grandchild from James) and his cousins, etc...playing tag and hide and go seek and all those fun kid games. Maybe he'll let me play too?

My Mom, sis and I took G over to the Spokane Valley Mall and had some professional pictures taken of him at Kiddie Kandids. We left my Dad and Ed at the house to watch football. Our appointment was at 5:30 and they didn't even get started with us until about 6:15....right in the middle of G's booby and naptime. He was a happy little champ though - just like he always is! He was all smiles for most of his pictures but once he started to get annoyed/hungry/tired he went downhill fast. The last pictures happen to be of him sleeping actually, but they are still just as sweet. We got some adorable pictures, but I don't want to share them on here because they are coming out on our Christmas cards! :) So you'll just have to wait to see them!

When we left Hayden on 12/01/08 we were sad to go. Six days seemed like it would be awhile but it really did just fly by. There were people that we didn't get to see and there were others that we were lucky enough to get to see. We saw G's niece Camala who was born just 11 days after him. The last time we saw her she was a teeny tiny four pound thing. She has filled out and is a beautiful little girl. We got to see Ed's mom a couple of times, and we got to spend some time with Ed's long-time friends Steve and his wife Ruthie. We were very happy to get to go up there - it was a great trip!

A child of God! 11/30/08

G is a child of God! 11/30/08 Baptism

Ed and I knew that we wanted to have G baptized (or is it baptised?), dedicated, christened, blessed or whatever you choose call it. Ed and I were both raised Lutheran so it was an easy choice as it is a tradition that is important to both of us. The hard part was figuring out where to do it and when. We were not prepared to do it when we were home in July. We didn't really want to do it in Pocatello because there is not a church that we've attended down here on a regular basis, and of course our families aren't down here. So we decided to ask to have it done when we were in Coeur d'Alene this time. My Dad made arrangements with Pastor Buckaloo at Trinity Lutheran and he fit G in on 11/30/08. :) We asked my sister Sarah to be G's Godmother and we asked Ed's son James to be his Godfather. Or Sponsors, whichever you prefer to call them.

Here is an excerpt from his baptism:

"Sustain Garrett Edward with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both not and forever.

Garrett Edward, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever."

Welcome Son, I hope we do right by you!

G's first Thanksgiving

Gobble Gobble - G's first Turkey Day!

I know, I know, you all are probably tired of hearing about every one of Garrett's "firsts" but you do come back, so that must mean it hasn't driven you crazy quite yet. We got to go to Coeur d'Alene for Thanksgiving and dbe around our families. Our families haven't seen G in person since he was about 5 weeks old - and boy has he changed since then!!! Ed's mom and little brother were going to come over to my parents house from Kellogg but his mom has been having a problem with one of her hips and she didn't want to make the drive. We had hoped that my mom's sister Twyla and her family might come from Wisconsin but they weren't able to make the drive either.

So it was just the 9 of us: Me, Ed, G, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Sarah and of course the three doggies! We had brought a smoked turkey up and since our "party" had dropped from 12 people to 6 (humans that is) we decided to just make the smoked turkey and not a regular one. If you've never had a good smoked turkey you have to check it out at least once in your lifetime. We ate ourselves silly and had a great time together. I managed to keep Grandpa's mashed tater finger away from G's mouth but being the good mother that I am, I did slip him some whipped cream from Ed's pumpkin pie. That was the extent of G's first Thanksgiving.

Garrett came to visit me at work

Ed and Garrett came to visit me at work tonight. Ed brought me dinner and G had some booby. While they were here G decided to help me with my work. See what a good typer he is:

10 Thanksgiving thanks...

First off let me say that I have the most wonderful life. Seriously. I am blessed to get to be around the people that I am around and I am so thankful to be where I am in my life. Here is just a short list of what I am thankful for, just to remind myself how blessed I am. ***WARNING*** schmoopiness involved after this point...

1. I am thankful to be married to a man who values me as a person, a wife, a mother, and a woman. He makes me feel like a better person by giving me the opportunity to do things for myself.

2. I am thankful that he still likes me (sometimes a lot even!) and he still wants to spend a lifetime together. I couldn't have asked for a better match for me.

3. I am thankful that I have finally come to terms with my body, as rickety and problematic as it is. I am proud of it. Not only did my body develop and nurture something smaller than a grain of rice into a human being, it sustained him for 9 months in my body. And now it continues to give him all the best things to help him grow into a healthy boy. I feel empowered.

4. I am thankful that I get to be let in on the coolest occupation in the whole world - parenthood. Seriously - there is no greater joy, sorrow, and challenge. And those who know me best know I like a challenge.

5. I am thankful that after a couple of years of struggling we were able to make a strong, healthy, intelligent, and loving little boy.

6. I am thankful that all of my family was able to share our journey over the last year with us. Having a baby makes us realize how much we miss being able to see our families more often. We love the fact that they welcomed our little boy with open arms!

7. I am thankful for dark chocolate Snickers. Seriously - have you tried them?

8. I am thankful for a job that I enjoy doing and can excel at. The people that I've gotten to work with are warm and caring, and most genuinely enjoy what they do. I am glad that I have had the opportunity to be a part of this team.

9. I am thankful for the fact that my dogs are happy, healthy, and mind fairly well. Sure, they're fat, but I like to think that shows that we love them enough to feed them a little extra! Ha! I am so thankful that they are good around the baby, because the thought of having to get rid of them because we had the baby was heartbreaking.

10. I am thankful for my son. My son. Yes, I get to say that now. I cannot believe that God chose me to guide this little man in his life. I love waking up to him (even if it is 2-3 times a night) and I love getting to watch him experience his world. His presence calms me and grounds me and gives me a purpose in my life. He is everything I could have ever dreamed of and so much more.

My Ed

Where we met: At the Region 1 office of course. :) On his first day in the region - sometime in May of 1998? I just remember thinking, "he's not so bad. At least he smells good."

How long we dated before we got hitched: HHhhmmm.....it depends on who you asked, I'll just give the info I'm sure about. We moved in together in February of 2002 and we were married in August of 2003.

What's your favorite feature about him: I love that he has "man hands." They are big and strong and callused and not at all girly. His eyes are the most beautiful (I know I'm not supposed to say that about a man) shade of gray green. And he's got the cutest little divot in the end of his nose that matches his dimples. The whole package still gives me goose bumps.

What's your favorite quality about him: Have you ever seen my t-shirt from our Yellowstone 2007 trip? I sleep with Old Faithful. I love that he's dependable. When you need him, he is there. He is responsible and reliable and he's that way with anyone and at his job. And, he's so affectionate. He taught me how to hold hands in public, and how to kiss in public, etc...now I grab a little handful of arse no matter who is looking. He created a monster.

His favorite color: CAMO! Duh.

His favorite food: Ramen! Hahaha - just kidding. It'd have to be anything "game-y." That man loves his meat. He's picky about his Mexican food, and he loves Chinese.

His favorite sport: To play - baseball. To watch - football.

Who said the L word first: A source of debate in our house. Neither one of us is sure who said it first. I know it came easier for him to say, but it might have been me. Neither of us really seems to remember. If you ask him he will tell you he said it first.

First kiss - when and where: Sorry peeps, that's for him and me to relive privately. That's our special memory. Holy cow SPARKS. That's all I can tell you.

Favorite things to do: Me!!! Hahaha. He loves to take drives in the woods or go hiking. He loves to snap pictures of animals and nature, and now G and mommy! He just loves to be outdoors. He also loves surfing the net and "fixin" stuff.

How many kids: Legitimate? I haven't checked around at the Reservation yet...He now has two sons and one daughter.

His hidden talent: He's a big ol' softy for babies. Oh - and he's very very mechanically inclined. I call him my McGyver. Seriously, there isn't anything he doesn't know how to fix.

His age: Old enough to know better, too young to care! (did I get it right Ed?).

His favorite music: He likes a lot of stuff. His ringtone is The Doobie Brothers, he likes Queen, The Doors, etc...a lot of stuff like that. He also likes country.

What I admire most about him: He's not afraid of anything. He will try anything at least once and he does it full force. I hold back. I wish I could be more like him.

His favorite past time: Watching football (college, NFL, you name it), surfing and playing freecell, getting lost in the woods.

Will he read this: I don't know if he still visits the blog or not. He knows I have one but I'm not sure if he follows along with it or anything. If I find out he does maybe someday I can get him to post to it too! Hahaha - yeah right!

Whew! What a couple of weeks!

Sorry for not updating sooner. I have plenty of pictures to post for y'all but I'm at work right now and they're not on this computer of course! :)

***NEW COMPUTER***
My laptop finally went kaput on me and I had a hard time talking myself into buying a new one, especially so close to the holidays. But the reality is that I can't do my homework with a paper and pencil and put it in snail mail anymore, so I had to go buy a new computer. I was dreading having to spend money and decide what I wanted, but mostly I was dreading have to give up XP for Vista. What I've come to find out is that Vista isn't as bad as it's reputation would lead one to believe. I can handle it. I do miss a lot of the tweaks that I had with XP though. The coolest part is that I now have sound again, but that just encourages my Dad to "nudge" me on MSN and try to freak the dogs out. There is a webcam and microphone built in so "The Garrett Show" plays on MSN at least once a week and Grandpa, Grandma and Aunty are frequent viewers. They are going to be so surprised when they see him next week!

***SICK OF BEING SICK***
Seriously, does a little baby really have to catch EVERY dang virus out there? G has been sick with back to back colds since that first one in mid September. This last one has held on an extra long time and he is a snot factory. Lovely I know. His cough has a rattle in it and it had been keeping him up at night. Poor kid was up at least every 2 hours and the only thing that would get him back to sleep would be some booby. So I haven't gotten much sleep either! After trying to let the sickness run it's course we took him into the doctor earlier this week and he's on his very first round of antibiotics. Ever try to get a 4.5 month old to swallow 7ml of a thick hot pink liquid that he has no intention of swallowing, without getting the hot pink all over yourself and whatever you are wrestling on? Yeah, big fun. He takes the medicine a lot better from Ed than he does from me. In fact this morning he spit it right back into my face. Good thing I like pink.

G got weighed when we were there, and he's a whopping 17 pounds and 10 ounces! Can you say "Welcome to the NFL" ???

***TEETH!***
On 11/11/08 Garrett's first two teeth (the bottom front ones) popped through. We haven't gotten a picture yet because he only shows them when he is smiling and as soon as we get out a camera he stops smiling. I think he takes after me that way. Little turkey. I am still breastfeeding and determined to continue to do so, but I have to admit - those little teeth are SHARP! I'm assuming that the nips will toughen up to the beating they are taking and really the only time he hurts me is in the middle of the night when he's lazy about his latch. Since the chomp down hurts me and wakes me right up, I wake him up and make him latch correctly, and then we're good to go.

***SOLIDS***
Since rice cereal was a pretty big hit, we thought we'd go ahead and start with some fruits. So far G has only had banana's but he sure likes them. He takes them from his Dad a lot easier than he does me - but that's because he really would rather just have booby. When we were grocery shopping at Walmart the other day we picked up some different kinds of other fruits and a few veggies. G loves to watch us eat and he is fascinated with how we put things in our mouths. He has started to mimic us using his binky though. Such a smart boy! :)

***NEW FRIENDS***
Last night Ed had to run the run the range until about 8 pm (low light shoot) and I worked at 3 pm so I brought G to work with me and he went home with my boss. What??? :) My boss is awesome - she's a momma of 5 kids herself and so I trust her with him, it's just not a "relationship" I want to abuse by asking her for this favor very often. Apparently they had a great time and Cindi's (yes my bosses name is Cindi as well) two younger boys gave G some of the toys that they don't play with anymore. How sweet is that? I'd farm G out for free toys anyday - have you seen what those things cost????

Today he's hanging out with Brianna, our friend's 16 year old daughter. This is the first time I've left G with somone under the age of 30 - but I trust her too. She's a sweetie and she really likes him, so I know she'll take good care of him. I'm just proud of myself for being able to let go and do it!!!

***ROLLIN' WITH HIS HOMIES***
G's rolling is insane now! He loves to play on the floor and he rolls all over the place. The funny thing is that when he gets on his tummy (he doesn't like to be on his tummy) he tries REALLY hard to get up on his knees and elbows. I wonder how much longer we can keep him from crawling! If he's not working on getting up to crawl he gets supremely pissed off about being on his belly. He seems to have forgotten that he knows how to roll to his back for some reason. I know he'll figure it out again someday.

***TRAVELING!***
Well we are soon to make another long drive north, this time for Thanksgiving. We are so excited to get to see our family and maybe some friends. Neither of our families have seen G since we were up there with him this summer - and he was still an itty bitty newborn! He was all of 5 weeks old the last time he saw them and now he's 5 months old! For those of you that think you are going to hold and cuddle him, good luck. The boy never stops moving! But of course we'll let you try!!! I am trying hard to get ready to even start packing. We've done 95% of our Christmas shopping so we can bring it up there and leave it instead of having to pay to ship it all up. That means I have to find out from Ed where he hid all the Christmas decorations and wrapping paper so I can get those taken care of before we leave. Oh, and I suppose I should pack some clothes for everyone.

***BAPTISM***
While we're up north we're going to have G baptized at the church I basically grew up in. This will be during the second service (11:00 am) on Sunday 11/30/08. If you'd like to know more just email one of us or call. We asked my sister Sarah and Ed's son James to be G's godparents. You might remember that that's who stood up for us at our wedding as well. :) I'll have pictures of course - but that's a week and a half away still.

***SCHOOL***
We are driving home on Monday 12/01/08. That also happens to be my first day back at school since my leave of absence for maternity leave started on 06/02/08. I'm glad to be getting going again but I'm dreading trying to figure out how I'm going to fit studying and schoolwork in with the rest of my life! Anyone with tips, feel free to leave them here!

And, I'm spent. That's all you get for right now! :)

Happy T Day everyone (it's early but I forget easy)

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off of your thighs!

For your viewing pleasure...

No one makes G laugh like Daddy makes G laugh! :) This is from over a month ago but I just got around to downloading some stuff of the camcorder. :) Enjoy Mr. Giggles!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjC1DyA3q0o

It's about 5 minutes worth, but you don't have to watch it all the way through to get the picture. :) They go on and on like that for 15-20 minutes at a time. I would have put it directly on here but it's too big of a file, so I had to just link you to my youtube!

It's in!

TOOTH #2 IS HERE!!! Eek!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

eek! another big thing!!!

G grabbed my hand this evening and went to chew on it, something he does regularly. And I felt a tooth! I stopped him from chewing and deliberately felt...and sure enough - HE HAS A TOOTH! It's his lower left front tooth, and I can feel that the right one is just about to erupt as well. He wouldn't let us really see it, he kept putting his tongue in the way! I'll get a picture just as soon as I can sneak one in!!! This certainly explains why his sleep patterns have been so whack for the last couple of nights. I can't believe my baby has a tooth already!!! I shouldn't really be surprised, considering he's been teething for at least two months now.

Bring on the roller derby!!!

Ed was in Boise again last week, for what will hopefully be his last trip over there until he has to go pick up his new SUV for Powell. On Thursday of last week, while Ed was driving home from Boise, Garrett rolled from his tummy to his back, a couple of times. I almost hated to tell Ed because I knew he would be sad that he missed it. He was.

But today Garrett finally made it from his back to his belly! That one was tough for him - getting that one darn arm out of his way took awhile. Now he's a rolling fool!!! I watched him do it a couple of times before I went to work tonight, and he's since done it several times for Ed. I think Garrett was getting more excited about the fact that I was excited than what he actually did. I was jumping up and down, hootin' and hollerin' and kissing all over him.

That's my boy - making changes in his little world and growin' like a weed!!!

Profound & so true...

It is as grandmothers that our mothers come into the fullness of their grace. ~Christopher Morley

Garrett's sitter

A lot of you have asked about who watches G while Ed and I are at work. I thought I had somewhat introduced his sitter on here before, but I guess I hadn't.

Ed and I work opposing shifts as much as possible to save money. And when we overlap (i.e. I work at 1 pm and Ed gets off work at 4 pm) G goes to the sitter. His sitter is a woman my age named Cami (not to be confused with our granddaughter/G's niece Cami) who is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. She's as stay at home mom to 3 year old Jordan, a little boy that G finds hilariously entertaining. Cami's husband is a resident doc at Portneuf Medical, where G was born. Strangely, but luckily, I found her on www.craigslist.org. You might remember reading a post from around August about a woman who offered to "eat" G, but rest assured this is not that woman.

We feel very blessed to have found Cami and her Jordan - they are so sweet and loving with G. Cami takes great care of my baby boy. It makes going to work easier, but not easy!!! Thankfully G hasn't started the "my Mom is leaving me" cry thing. I hope to avoid that altogether but I don't know if I'll be so lucky!!!

So I hope that satisfies your curiosity!!!

The Great Diaper Debate

When G was born we used Pampers Swaddlers, and they worked okay. Then he started peeing out the front of them. We switched to Huggies. Those worked for a couple of weeks, then he started peeing out of the front and sides of the. We went up to the next size of Pampers, and all was well.

G's size 2 diapers are too small (of course after I bought a case of 200+ of them) so we've had to make the switch to size 3'd (yes already). Thankfully we have Ed's granddaughter Cami to pass the size 2's onto.

We went with Pampers Baby Dry since those worked so well in the size 2's. And more than once a day we've had the pleasure of repeated blow-outs out the top back of the diaper, all over his back. Thankfully we've learned the beauty of that laundry helper called Shout. Have you ever tried to change a wiggly 4 months old diaper on the backseat of a car while trying to get his dirty onesie off over his head without smearing poop in his hair? Yeah, well...Garrett has had a poopy head more than once, let me just tell you that. Anyway...we decided we've had enough of poopy back syndrome so we tried some Huggies again. They are cool because they have this elastic thing at the top back of the diaper. No more poopy back! Now it's coming out the sides in the front. WHAT THE HELL???

We're going to stick with the Huggies for right now, but that's mostly based on the fact that I learned the hard way last week, after paying the $50 to become a Costco member, that Costco only carries their brand of diapers (Kirkland) and Huggies. It's handy to buy diapers in bulk at this point, since he should be in size 3's for awhile.

So that's just a tidbit of uselss info about our recent battle with diapers! Aren't you glad you came here?

Ed, G, and some rice cereal...

Last night (11/01/08) Ed decided to feed G his rice cereal mixed with a little expressed breast milk, with a spoon and bowl. I was at work so I missed it :( Ed said G did great - ate up all his cereal like he was a starving Ethiopian child. That's my boy!!! I hope to be home before 8 pm tonight so I can watch them this time!!!

I ordered a high chair off of www.walmart.com so we just have to wait for that to get to the store so I can pick it up. I wasn't about to pay shipping on something like that!! There were only a handful of high chairs at the stores around here, and they were all super girly - so I had to order it online. It makes me wish I was shopping in Missoula already!!!

G's first Halloween!

We had intended to take G to a pumpkin patch on Friday (10/31/08) since Ed and I both had that day off together. We had a copule of things slowing us down that day so we didn't get out there until the afternoon, and by then it was closed down. So no cute G in the pumpkins pictures. :( But then we went home and waited for the trick or treaters!!! I figured I would try to "cherish" what is likely my last Halloween for a couple of years since I'm pretty sure we're not going to get anyone trick or treating our house in Powell. And if we do they might get shot.

Anyway, back to our Halloween. G found the trick or treaters hilarious. He smiled at all of them (except for the Grim Reaper - I think the sickle scared him but it kind of scared me too) and he flirted like crazy with all the girls, of course. Ed taught him that. I didn't have as much humor at the whole situation. Many were teenagers, well passed the age to be trick or treating. They didn't bother me as much as the honest to shout ADULTS that were trick or treating. And their costumes were half-assed to put it kindly. They were not taking their kids out - but taking their kids out and bringing along their own bag/bucket/pillowcase and looking for candy.

I had one 3' tall and 3' wide Native American kid who was probably about 8 carrying two sacks and he wanted candy in both. It's mean I know but dude needed to lay off the candy anyway. He had 3 adults with him who were also getting candy. I asked him why I should put candy in his second bag and he told me it was for his "other uncle." WTF? I said, "well where is he?" "At home watching Tv." OMG.

I had one girl who was probably right around 8. She stepped into my house, reached her hand right into the bucket and took a handful and left. No trick or treat, no thank you, nothing. I was so flabbergasted that I had nothing to say to the little demon. Hard for you to believe I know...but it's true. I had nothing to say, not even to her parents who were standing right there.

I had one group of teenagers who had 1 actual "kid" with them. I had the first "shift" and Ed had the second. The jerks came back a second time (Ed was at the door by then. I just happened to walk out and see them and was like, "WTF are you doing back here?"

I had two younger boys who were probably between 7 and 10 and they rang the doorbell a couple of times in the 20 seconds it took me to get to the door. And when I got there they were smashing their little piggy faces against the window of the door, so now I need to break out the Windex.

And, as a last piece to share with you - I had one girl who was at least 15 and she had no costume on...I thought I was being generous and I gave her 2 pieces of candy and she said, "Didn't you see the sign around my neck?" It said something like, "Will work for candy." I told her to mow my damn lawn and I'd give her more candy. She laughed and said, "No that's just my way of asking for more candy." WTF? I said, "Well I actually DO work to buy this candy - so enjoy what I gave you and quit begging."

Good thing I won't be having Halloween duties again for about 6 years huh? Oy. If G pushes to participate we'll have to take him up to my Mom and Dad's house for trick or treating. But I kind of like the idea of just having costumes around the house for him to wear whenever he wants to anyway...I can see him having an active imagination, he doesn't need Halloween to be a reason to dress up. Can't you see Ed coming home from work one day and having a dragon greet him at the mud room? Or a dinosaur, etc.???

One of the many reasons I love Ed...

I worked until 11 pm last night. I had to be at work by 10 am this morning. Garrett ate at midnight, then he woke up again at about 5 am (totally normal for him). I fed him and we went back to sleep, snuggling. At about 6 am Ed woke up (he's a day shift guy remember?) and he quietly took Garrett and went upstairs with him. He then came down at about 9 am and woke me up so that I could be at work by 10 am. I got to sleep by myself (I love my little G-Man but I don't sleep as well when he's in the bed with me) and I got to sleep in!!! It was lovely!

I love my Ed. He's such a good husband. And a good daddy!!!

A fluke I'm sure - but cool just the same!

Garrett had his binky and it popped out, a regular occurrence 'round these parts. He grabbed it with his hand and held it up so he could look at it, studying it for a minute (this kid is a thinker). He then promptly plopped the binky right back into his mouth. Oh there have been so many times that I've wished he could do that - and he did it. Like the title says, probably a fluke, but I still thought it was cool enough to share! :)

Garrett is running a fever from his vaccinations yesterday. Ed took the afternoon off to stay home with him so he didn't have to go out of the house. I love that Ed loves taking care of his boy!

16 lbs 9 oz & 27 inches long at 4 months!

Garrett weighs in at 16 pounds 9 ounces and he is 27 inches tall! Can I just tell you how much I love that I have a big and healthy boy?!? He's not a chunk by any means (even though he is sporting a double chin), but he is a solid little guy!

The doctor went to look in his ears with one of those things that they pop the cone thing off of (with the light) and he moved Garrett around so fast that he startled him and Garrett started to cry. The doctor scared him. I found this odd because normally he really likes his doctor.

Anyway, then came the shots...G has already had one set of shots. I didn't know he was getting more today. Had I known he was due for more shots I would have scheduled the appointment for one of my days off. Crap. Anyway, the nurses shot him and he SCREAMED bloody murder. My poor bug!!! It took a lot longer to calm him this time - he wouldn't slow down his crying long enough for me to latch him onto his booby. But eventually I calmed him down, he ate a little bit, and he fell asleep hard. This time the shots almost made me cry for some reason. Maybe it's because he's getting older and "know" more of what is going on? He gets another set of them at his 6 month appointment. I think I will schedule it so that Ed has to take him that time. I have done my fair share. Although Ed doesn't have the cure-all booby like I do...

He's above average in height, weight, head circum., etc...and the doctor was impressed with his motor skills. He gave us the okay to start cereal if we want to...too bad we already did that last week. He said to start him on solids at 6 months, if he doesn't show an interest in them (i.e. watching us eat and mimicking) earlier than that anyway. So that's where we stand!

Full circle

A year ago (10/20/07) our lives changed in the best possible way. We found out we were pregnant. I pee'd on the stick, and the test line came screaming thru faster than the control line did. I was shocked, since I was certain that it would be negative yet again. After so many months of trying, and only seeing that + one other time, I didn't think it would ever happen again. All Ed could do was grin and hug me. Some of you might remember that that is the same day that I shot my first deer. Ed took the rack off of that deer and he mounted it on a plaque. It now hangs above Garrett's crib in camo-themed nursery. I look at that mount everytime I walk into the nursery and I still get that tingling feeling I got that day. I prayed for weeks straight that this little bean would stick and grow into our baby. And boy did that bean stick!

After the initial ten or so weeks of worrying that I would miscarry again, I started to relax and enjoy the fact that I was pregnant and that I was going to be a mom. It went by so fast. We told everyone at Christmas (I was about 12 weeks along), found out we were having a boy at the end of January (at 17 weeks along), found out that he was healthy and mostly likely OI free by April (28 weeks along), and had Garrett at the end of June (at 39 weeks along). I still remember the first time I felt him move, the first time I watched my belly move with him, and the first time that Ed felt him. That was incredible to experience.

I spent 40 weeks promising God that I would be a better person, that I would raise an exceptional, caring, respectful, and productive human being, if only He would gift us with this baby. He did, and now here we are. Garrett is a healthy little boy who loves his doggies and his mommy and daddy. He is growing like a fool, and finding new things to experience in his world every day. He found his feet last week, he laughs and giggles, and his newfound passion is blowing spit bubbles. He finds himself hilarious. Him and his dad are always together unless Ed is at work. Garrett loves his booby, he's a good sleeper, a joyful soul, and an answer to our prayers.

I get to see a whole new side of Ed that I never thought I'd witness. I knew he was a good dad, but watching him be a Dad to our son is a gift in itself. Now Ed will tell me stories about things that James and Stacy did as babies, relating them to Garrett. He discusses all his milestones and all the plans he has for Garrett. I have watched Ed become calmer and I see him slow down to enjoy things a lot more. I get to watch him be proud of his little boy and all his teeny little accomplishments. I'm positive that Ed will enjoy Garrett as he grows up just as much as he enjoys him now.

And as for me. I have come to realize that Garrett is my greatest accomplishment ever. I could cure cancer tomorrow and that would come second to this little person that I got to help create and have the privilege of taking care of. Even when he's crying or has just poop sprayed me (don't ask, you don't want the visual) I still look at him in awe and wonder why God chose me to be his mom. When his eyes open and he realizes it's me he's looking at and he smiles, my day can't get any better, and when he puts his little hand in mine, the touch is electric and magical.

My purpose in life is clear. I am meant to be Ed's wife. And I am meant to be Garrett's mom. And we are meant to be a wacky little family. I take a lot of comfort in knowing why I am here.

What a gift we've been given.

A Prayer for our son

A Prayer For My Son

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee -- and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, give him, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain."

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!!!

We figured out that unless we want to move a very heavy freezer full of food, we'd better start eating some of said food. Therefore, we decided that the first to go would be the turkey from last year that we never got around to cooking. What day should we make it Ed asks me? I don't care - let's just make it. We forgot to pull it out of the freezer so when we finally remembered on Sunday we were obviously obligated to make it Monday. Little did we know, until later that day, that it was Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Look at us being all multi-cultural and stuff. Hahaha! Garrett sat in his bebe pod and helped/watched me make stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. He sat and watched us for about an hour - just chattering with us and playing with his toy.

Here we are stopping what we were doing so that daddy could take our picture!
Then out came the turkey, which Garrett found VERY interesting. He got a little taste, but he didn't actually get to consume any of it. Yet. This boy has no choice - he's going to be a born and bred meat eater!
Garrett after having a little taste of mashed potatoes. Think he liked them?
Back to his pod toy instead. Apparently he prefers plastic over my taters. I will have to remember that.
Imitating his daddy, who ate way too much turkey and stuffing, etc...Ed was in the same position on the couch.

And of course we got to sit and watch the NLCS game and some Monday Night football. It was nice to have a day to do something different but stay at home just the same!

Don't worry Mom - we will still be ready for turkey in November!!!

The giggle that makes my world go round...

Garrett has found his voice. And it's a beautiful and happy little sound!!! He loves to chatter about nothing in particular, but he mostly does it for his dad. He is a lot like Ed - he wakes up early and he wakes up happy and that's when his chattering starts. I love that he chatters softly to me until I wake up too, and as soon as I open my eyes I'm greeted by the biggest "Hi Mom!" smile that a girl could ask for. It never fails to make me laugh and when I laugh he laughs and smiles some more.

When I'm at work Ed and Garrett like to call me so that I can listen to all his happy little noises. He now squeals with delight at the red frog on his swing and the toys that surround him on his Jumperoo. I guess maybe it's an acquired "taste", but it would break my heart to go even one day without hearing him now. I'm sure at some point I will wish him quiet - but for now I'm just enjoying it!!!

Scoutin'! We start 'em early round these parts!

Ed and I have been working opposites shifts with opposing days off since I started back to work at the end of August. During the month of October we have three weekends off together - the first of which was this last weekend. We packed up the baby and the dogs on Monday and did something we haven't been able to do for awhile - we went out into the wild wild woods! The last time we did something like that I was about 28 weeks pregnant, and it was a little uncomfortable. Being out in the woods is something that Ed LOVES to do and I have come to love it as well. Now we have Garrett to enjoy it with us! We started out the day with G falling asleep on the drive to where we were headed. Once we got off of the paved road I pulled him out of his carseat and smelled something rank. He had his second official poop blow out for me to find. Lucky me! Poor baby got ticked off something fierce though when I went to change him in the 55 degree air. It was a chilly but sunny day! We suited him up in his fleece camo outfit (coat and pants) from Black Sheep and he was ready to go for the rest of the day!

Garrett and his Daddy, just chillaxin' in the woods. Don't worry - that's not a scowl that a "You woke me up from my nap and I want some booby before you get a picture" face.
Garrett was riding in his new mei tai, it's a handy baby carrier so that I can strap him right to me. This has to be one of my favorite pictures of him - even if it includes Ed's butt (also one of my favorite things) in the background.
Can you see me? I'm camo'd!!! For most of the drive Garrett just sat and watched out the window. He loved it when we would open the moon roof cover so he could watch the trees that way. He would have his booby, sleep (the rocking motion of the bumpy ride did him in), wake up, chatter, watch some more, have his booby and sleep some more. I don't think he got fussy even one time! We are so thankful that we have such a sweet and calm boy! When we got home we changed him into his PJ's and he fell asleep HARD. He slept for almost 8 hours straight that night. It was awesome for me!!! Fresh air does a growing little boy good!!!

Random pictures

Peek-a-boo - I see you! Garrett loves to lay on the couch and curl up with a blanket. He now pulls it up over his eyes and then pulls it down again. He only plays with Daddy though - so I just get to sit and watch them!
Siren is fascinated with Garrett, but she often gets told no when it comes to the baby. I put him on the floor and let the dogs approach him. Siren is so hesitant because she knows not to "touch" the baby unless Ed or I tell her it's okay. Right after I took this picture Garrett spit up a little bit and Siren cleaned it up before I could even open my mouth to tell her to back off. Now she thinks he is that much cooler.
Garrett and Daddy watching some football. I think someone must have tackled someone else - hence the look on Garrett's face.
Garrett taking a nap on Mommy after some good ol' booby time. This boy loves his booby!
Garrett has a new trick. As soon as his diaper comes off now - his hands go straight to his weiner. And he doesn't like to let it go. So diaper changes have become slight wrestling matches to keep his hands off long enough that we can at least get him wiped before he starts fooling around. Something tells me that Ed taught him this trick. Boys.
Garrett's new/next car seat arrived in the mail the other day. It's the Britax Marathon - basically one of the highest rated car seats in the safety department. And of course you'll notice that it's camo. Ed decidedly stated, "My boy needs that!" It's a good thing we were shopping for a Britax anyway!
