G has an attitude problem.
He has an embarrassingly bad attitude and he's been sooooooooooooooo disrespectful that I don't even like to talk to him.
I've been working a lot and he's kind of gotten to do his own thing and apparently that isn't a good idea. He spends too much time watching cartoons or playing Wii or even being online. I have had to convince him to go outside and he doesn't stay out long, saying, "I'm cold, let's go inside and play Wii." This coming from a nature boy is odd behavior.
So I'm taking on less work in the hopes that I can work with him on his behavior and attitude. Day #1 was rough, he fought me on everything...simply for the sake of fighting. I'd tell him something (or give him an order if you want to look at it that way) and he'd get in my face and stare at me with a nasty look on his face and not say a word...daring me to do something about it. So I do do something about it (did I just say do do?) and that's either sending him to his room or spanking him. I give the "punishment" a time limit and he's usually calmed down and forgotten about it by then. And I take away stimulants...Wii or TV or the computer (he loves to watch Youtube videos). These are privileges and he's come to think they are a right. And there are time limits on entertainment. We do a round or two of Mario Kart and then it gets shut off. He throws a fit and gets sent to his room, etc. and he loses that privilege for the rest of the day. I am kind of scared about having a kid who can't entertain himself. That never used to be an issue with him.
I've instituted a 9 pm bedtime. Not much wiggle room, 9 pm hits and it's bedtime, period. And I'm not putting him to sleep, he can put himself to sleep. I think that's going to be the hardest one for E, he usually lays with G in his bed until he falls asleep. The first night G cried and whined and gave lots of attitude but the second night, he went in and crawled into bed and I gave him a kiss goodnight. I had to go in his room once because I heard chatting. I found him hanging from his bed, his feet like hooks into the mattress, his head under the bed making Roarbert the lion dance. Weirdo.
Dinnertime has been another attitude riddled battle. Last night he got to stay at the dinner table, long after we were done eating until he ate his dinner himself. Usually E gets frustrated and he doesn't want to sit at the table forever so he feeds G. G knows this and so he just doesn't do it himself until E gets mad and does it for him. So he sat at the dinner table and didn't get to leave until he ate himself. Guess what? He eventually did it because he got tired of sitting at the table.
Duh.
Christmas should be fun in the attitude department. Christopher the Elf went back to the North Pole to talk to Santa about G's bad attitude and now G is worried about being on The Bad List. He's working to get himself back on The Good List. I hate Santa but heck, if he helps out I think I'll exploit him. If he's ungrateful for the gifts he's given I'll probably lose my cool and no one wants that to happen. It's messy.
a little bit about what's here
Welcome to my brains dump station. Please don't feel obligated to read it but if you are here it's because you expressed an interest in being here or I just happen to think you're rad and want to include you in our life. Feel free to comment so that I know if anyone is reading! Not that it would stop me from blogging if no one did read, it's just nice to know who is around every once in awhile! I'll try to hit spell check before I post but I make no guarantee's! It's my blog and therefore you will find that I don't censor myself very often, especially when it comes to swear words (I'm working on it). If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to not read. I'm okay with that.
I love being a work from home mom to my one and only child, G. He is a dream that I never thought would come true. It's my goal in my life to raise him to be thoughtful, witty, respectful, gentle, sincere, creative, determined, instinctive, charming, frank, truculent, faithful, reflective, happy, active, bright, ambitious, talented, productive, decisive, kind hearted, friendly, proud, sarcastic, calm, righteous, generous, protective, dynamic, silly, adaptable, brave, honorable, gregarious, funny, fearless, outgoing, magnanimous, confident, cultured, fair and just plain amazing. It's not too tall an order, it's my life's work.

My father!
I turned the TV to Thomas and the new "making tracks to great destinations" episodes start out with a man talking, reading a letter he wrote to his son and he ends it with, "Your loving daddy."
G said, "Mommy, he knows my father's name. My father's name is Daddy! He said my father's name!"
I told G that his father's given name is actually Edward but that he probably prefers to go by Daddy.
G said, "Edward? Like my name? I have my father's name!"
I love watching the wheels in his head turning as he figures things out.

Another parenting principle
Success is inspirational; disaster is educational.
I like to expose G to things that I have a good inclination will not work out well. If I only exposed him to things I knew he'd love/like or things that we'd done before he'd never learn how to handle himself in different situations. For instance, dining out. He's usually kind of a turd when dining at a nice restaurant. Most of the time he doesn't want to eat and he certainly doesn't want to sit and be quiet because, well he's a 4 year old boy.
He's into a new behavior of throwing a fit when he has to leave somewhere he doesn't want to leave. As in throwing a big, screaming, kicking, throwing himself around fit. Yes, he's done this before but it's a lot harder now that he's older and larger in size. It's really embarrassing to be "that mom" dragging a screaming child out of the library.
So I have found myself avoiding places that I know he'll love because I don't want to deal with the fit that will surely come. Places like the library. He loves the library. I'm good at reserving books online that I want to check out for him so that I can just run in and grab them and he doesn't have a chance to become invested in library time. I'm not doing him any favors, keeping him from doing something he loves. I need to give him the opportunity to learn that the world doesn't revolve around what he wants.
If we don't have time to do something he wants to do I don't explain why because that just gives him ammo in his argument on why we should do it. But he's old enough to get an explanation I suppose. I know I ask, "Why?" or "What?" when a demand is made of my time. I just want an explanation so I know what's going on, I like to have all the information possible to control my environment the best...it's why I don't like being surprised. So next time he asks "But why?" instead of glossing over an answer sure to displease him I'll just give him the answer. Maybe if I give him more control over his his time and his environment he'll self-learn how to control himself.

damn kid
I forgot to lock the bathroom door, again. Foolish me.
G walks right on in and starts asking me to do something for him. I'm sitting on the toilet with my pants at my ankles.
Calmly I say, "Son, please leave. I'm going potty and I would prefer to be alone."
Ignore.
In a stern voice I say, "Garrett, I am sitting on the toilet, you don't need to be in here. Leave."
He stands in the wide open doorway, rocking back and forth on his heels while whistling innocently like Dennis the Menace would do.
(btw he purses his lips and sucks the air in to make a whistling noise).
One more time, "Garrett PLEASE for the love of all things holy would you leave me the hell alone. NOW."
He looks at me and without missing a beat continues to rock on his heels, whistle and grin.
So I grabbed a roll of toilet paper and threw it right at his head.
And I don't miss.
That's why I'm going to win Mother Of The Year again this year.
What? You've never spent the majority of your day with socks on your hand down the legs of the underwear you're wearing? I love the way his brain works.
He tells me, "I'm going to work out and get big and strong and fat like you mommy."
He was playing with his little learning laptop and said, "Oh no, I need to go poop." Then he stopped on his way to the bathroom and said, "Hey I can just take my laptop with me." I gave him a minute and then peek. Hahahaha!

Winner, winner chicken dinner!
1. I took almost the entire cabinet of CD's that I've been packing from house to house (which have all been downloaded to my computer anyway) to Hastings for their buy back program and made almost $250. I was expecting like $50 or $60.
2. The waiter at Buffalo Wild Wings forgot to put E's sandwich order in with the rest of the order so E got the sandwich for free...which made it so that we could afford to justify a $15 tip for a lunchtime bill totaling $23.
3. While wandering the food section of Walmart for groceries a teeny little woman with long, white blonde hair walked up to us and hugged my husband. Because it was his sister. The sister with the same name as me who I have never met in the 11+ years that E and I have been together. How random is THAT?
4. We got two new memory foam pillows ($100 value) for free because of the boxspring debacle.
5. G got to visit Santa and I got a cute picture and candy cane out of the deal. Santa gave G a candy cane for him, for mommy and for daddy. G promptly came to each of us and gave us our candy canes and insisted that I open his, which I did. He then packed his around in his hot little boy hand.
6. While G was emptying all the change in his pockets (we'd been collecting it) in the little red bucket of the Salvation Army bell ringer outside Walmart people kept coming up to him and giving him money to put in the bucket. I think it was his super adorable elf like stocking cap. He happily kept shoving money into the bucket.
7. I sold the bed frame from my queen bed on Craigslist for $100. Less stuff in my house that is not being used and more money in my pocket. Sweet!
8. I didn't hit the two deer that tried desperately to get me to hit them on the slightly nerve wracking, blizzard like conditions drive home from town. AND G fell asleep which is going to suck come bedtime tonight but he needed a nap and it made for a quiet drive home.
9. We came home to find...get this...well over one foot of new snow from this morning until when we got back this evening. E and G were so excited that they can't wait until tomorrow to go sledding, they're out there sledding in the dark.
10. Transcription work is a little bit of slim pickings this time of year (what, do criminals take a winter holiday?) but I fired up my computer and found 13 new audios assigned to me today. So it's been nice saying hi here and all but if I'm going to get the 24 files I now have in by deadline, there will be no playtime for me. Grateful but worried!
11. My Christmas 2012 family ornament was in the mail and I love it. I got Christmas cards out yesterday so I'm really ahead of the curve on that one!
12. My son was an absolute buttface (hey, I can say it, he's mine) today and all I did was laugh about it, there was no way I was going to let him sink my ship today! He got a smart swat on the butt at Walmart when he refused to go to the bathroom and I had to quite literally DRAAAAAAAAAAAG him all the way from the cart out in the store into the toilet stall. And I didn't feel bad about spanking him, not one little bit. Even the most "gentle" parent would have thought it justified, believe me. When he was peeing he kept yelling at his own crotch. "Pee! Stop coming out! Stop, I don't want to pee! Don't do that, stop it!" Oy.
13. I had a good hair day, which is a miracle in and of itself.

Oh ow
We have to return one of the boxsprings from our new mattress set because it came out of the package torn in several spots. I was holding up the top mattress and E was pulling the boxspring out. You know those plastic edge cover things that you're supposed to take off? Well since we knew we were going to return the boxspring for an undamaged one next time we go to town we left those on. E wasn't watching what he was doing, G was in screwing around behind him even though he'd been told to get out of the way, and I was watching the two of them...so I didn't see how close the boxspring was to my face...until it came scraping across my facing, hooking onto my nose ring and tearing down my lip.
Um, ow.
Tears. Real ones, not the, "I want to make you feel like a jerk," ones. E was concerned, I told him to just go get the boxspring from G's bed (we're using it temporarily until we get the new one tomorrow). Once he left the room to do that I let myself cry a little. That mother trucking HURT. One we got the temporary boxspring in I took a look at my nose but I knew it was bleeding because G felt the need to tell me he could see blood. He was very sweet and got me a piece of toilet paper so I didn't drip blood on the new carpet. Which is actually kid of funny because since the day the new carpet was put in G has been making comments about various members of this household getting a bloody nose and dripping on the carpet and being in big trouble with Mommy. Stands to reason I'd be the first yes?
The hole is torn a little bit and it swelled up so fast that I didn't have time to get the nose screw out. It is nice a clown red.
So what did I do? I waxed my mustache.
Because when I was checking the damage to my nose I noticed that I had a 5 o'clock shadow going on on my upper lip. Why can't people (achem, Edward) tell me when my mustache gets that bad? How many people have seen it and walked way laughing at the fact that I have a better mustache than most 16 year old boys?
This getting older thing/hormones changing thing is for the birds.

Conversations of corn
We had corn as part of our dinner last night. G forgot about it until he went poop this afternoon. So we had to have the great "why corn comes out whole in your poop" discussion. G doesn't believe the facts, he's convinced that the corn puts itself back together in your stomach even if you chew it really well. Oy.

It's king sized!
My back, neck and shoulders have been killing me at night. I wake up hurting every morning. I wake up several times during the night to readjust because some appendage has gone numb. I tell E this and he says maybe it's time for a new mattress set. Pshaw, I say, this one is only...oh crap this one is almost 15 years old.
Yeah, maybe it is time. But it's Christmas so I'm not about to buy something so expensive until the rest of our gift receivers are taken care of.
We were in town. I said, "Do you know how much a mattress costs?" "No clue, I haven't bought a mattress set in forever." So suggested that we price them just so we know what we need to get into a new one.
We left with a king sized memory foam Tempurpedic (is that how you spell that?) mattress set. I've never had a king sized bed but I wanted one. Why? I don't know. It sure would have been nice when G was itty bitty and sleeping in our bed with us but my time machine isn't working anyway so I won't wish too much for that.
When we got home we discovered that one of the boxsprings had a hole in the fabric on top and that the fabric on the sides were torn where it looked like maybe it was dragged across rocks or something. E called the store and we just have to take that boxspring back the next time we come to town and they'll give us two memory foam pillows for our trouble. Considering they were running a special that was $400 off the set because they were giving us the boxsprings for free...bwahahahahaha, we scored! We also managed to leave there with a new set of king size sheets.
I have always bought my blankets/comforters, etc. in king size because I like having the overhang. I guess they don't make something king sizer than the king size but at least I don't have to buy any new bedding!
So hopefully YAY for good sleeping for the first time in a few months!

A day in the life of...us.
I suppose it's time that G doesn't get to hop in the shower with me on a whim any more. Because now every shower (it happens rarely but it does happen out of convenience) involves conversations about wieners and vaginas. Or take off the vah and you get how G says it, gina (not Gina). Sometimes he says angina. Hahaha!
Today since he decided to cut his own hair with the scissors I left on the counter and stepped away from for less than two seconds (because I was giving E a haircut)...because G was busy playing Mario Kart so I thought it was safe...he had to get his hair cut to fix his handiwork and I threw him in the shower with E to wash all the errant hairs off of him (he fuh-reaks if they get in his mouth, it's a little comical in a pitiful kind of way). G was still in the shower so I hopped in really quick instead of getting him out, drying him off, getting him dressed, then getting in myself. After our typical conversation about how mommy's wiener broke off and how Siren has a gina G asked if he could use my loofah to scrub his butt. Uh, no but thanks for asking. I gave his fanny a little pinch and put conditioner in my hair. My back was to G as I was doing this and he exclaimed, "Wow mommy your butt is so big!" E was at the counter brushing his teeth and he snickered. Before I could say a word G said, "And you shut it, Daddy!" So I snickered.
We're such winner parents aren't we?
I told G it wasn't nice to comment on the size of a woman's butt and he just laughed and made some sing-songy bit up about how big my rear is.

This is after my attempt to fix it without shaving him bald. Good thing I've already made our Christmas cards huh?
Why yes this is his, "What, Mom? I don't know what you're talking about," face. He wears it well don't you think?
We bought a Black Friday deal on a little flat screen TV to put in G's room so he can watch his dvd's in there. Before you go crazy on what a bad idea that is, hear me out. The hope is that we can keep him and his toys in his room. Now whenever he watches a movie or TV he brings stuff out to play with since he can't sit still and it gets strewn about the house. It's a reasonable idea. I have literally found that I'm less stressed out when there aren't toys e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e.. No, we're not confining him to his room or anything. Well his new TV showed up today. He's super excited about it. I didn't order a wall mount because I know nothing about flat screen TV's so we can't put it in his room just yet. I put it in the back room for now.
G came to me while I was working and said, "Where did my TV go?" I said, "Remember earlier when we were in the shower and you were mean to me and hurt my feelings by saying I had a big butt?" "Yeah..." "I sent your TV back because you were mean to mommy." I was totally joking. I really was. He just walked away, didn't even seem upset. An hour later he came into the office in tears. "Oh no, what's wrong son?" "I'm sorry I was mean mommy. I don't want to be mean, I want to be a good boy." It took me about 15 seconds to figure out what he was talking about. I said, "Oh bud, I was just teasing you, I didn't send your TV back! I was just kidding."
Oh yes, he was upset that he had been mean to me and hurt my feelers. I'm sure he was equally upset at the thought that his new TV was gone but I like to think that it was more the feelers thing. I feel like such a jerk. I showed him his TV and explained to him that it had to stay there until Daddy could mount it on his wall but that I didn't send his TV back and I was just teasing him. He blubbered for a few minutes and was all better. And here I am, blogging about it.

our kind of duck hunting
G and I needed to get out the house/away from the yard so I suggested we go down to the pond to see if we could find any ducks. My mom had left me her wide angle lens and a zoom lens to play with for a month or so until she comes back for Christmas so my suggestion was two fold, play for G and play for mommy.
I love little boy eyelashes.
He was again fascinated by the cattails but this time he wanted to know why someone went and cut off some cat's tail and put it in the pond.
"It's a plant, it's just called a cattail, it's not really a cats tail."
"But you said cattail."
"Yes, but it's not a real one, it's just a name for it."
"But you said."
"Okay fine, believe what you want."
"Okay I will."
Well I'll be, it started to snow on us! We had to make a run for the car!
We drove up the river a little bit because, well we weren't really ready to go home yet.
I wore his silly fanny out. Go mommy!

another reason why I love where I live
"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
~John Muir
This is the kind of education that we wanted to be able to give G and what better place to do that than here? People have asked me, "Why in the world do you live clear out there?" This is why. We wanted to give him his introduction into a world like this.

New carpet!
YES! FINALLY!
New carpet!!!!!!!
We didn't have to pay for it so that makes it even sweeter.
Except that we had to pack up and move everything out of the house. Well everything except the kitchen and bathrooms and then whatever we could pile in the kitchen and bathrooms. Big fun. I hope to never have to do that again for the rest of my life. It reminded me that we will have to pack and move three years from now though. Ugh. Maybe I should start now? G kept having little freak outs as we moved things out like, "Daddy pwease don't take away my bed." "I have to buddy but it'll come back in." "But I need it." Or my favorite, "Why you take away all my toys? I need my toys. I'm so bored."
E picked it out, nice yes? It feels good under the feet too, so much cushier than the 18 year old carpet we've been walking on for the last three years. And I think the lighter color will help during our long, dark winters!
Now I stress out about someone (who shall remain nameless) spilling stuff on it. Or someone (who shall also remain nameless) tracking stuff in on it. I will NOT buy a carpet cleaner. I will resist the urge.
Did you notice a familiar face in the pictures? Besides G that is. Nana came the Saturday before the carpet came in (Tuesday) to wrangle G while we packed and moved stuff. It was a very pleasant surprise. Her and I took G into town on Tuesday (after he cut his foot on a tack strip because heaven forbid he stay out of the way) and we went and watched Wreck It Ralph and did some shopping. Hella cute movie by the way. When we got home G was SO exicted about the new carpet. He ran all over it and rolled on it and kept making exclamations like, "There's new carpet in my house!" And, "Isn't this the awesomest carpet?" And, "I love my new carpet."
Tomorrow marks a week and he is still talking about how much he loves it.

Not him again...
Well, America (not popular opinion) you elected him, now figure out how to deal with him.
I voted for Romney. Yes, I'm saying it right here. I did. I would likely have voted Steve Urkel before Obama since I would at least believe Urkel's, "Aw did I do that?" ridiculousness.

momma's boy
Yay! It's so great to see that it's not a bad thing that I WANT to raise a momma's boy! Since G is my one and only I want to be close to him and I don't want that to change just because he starts growing armpit hair.

Right now he prefers his father, mostly, but he's coming back around to me. I can let E have this time since G was mine for the first two years...because he was a booby addict. Since I'm his 24/7 person (E works outside the home 10 + hours a day, 40+ hours a week) G gets tired and bored of me so his daddy is a lot more fun. Little does G know, I'm the more fun one. I love this article though and I hope as G gets older I'm able to not feminize him (not too worried about that because he's 100% boy) and yet give him qualities that are not gender specific. Like strength. It is feminine and masculine, we all should have it. It would be great if I could teach him the kind of feminine strength that allows us to bear children with little complaint and eradicate the man cold strength that his masculine side tends him towards, but I don't know that I can teach that. I can't see myself ever turning G away from my affection just to toughen him up. If I was willing to hug a daughter in the same situation why in the world wouldn't I hug a son? Nah. He's my only, I don't want to ever push him away.
