a little bit about what's here

Welcome to my brains dump station. Please don't feel obligated to read it but if you are here it's because you expressed an interest in being here or I just happen to think you're rad and want to include you in our life. Feel free to comment so that I know if anyone is reading! Not that it would stop me from blogging if no one did read, it's just nice to know who is around every once in awhile! I'll try to hit spell check before I post but I make no guarantee's! It's my blog and therefore you will find that I don't censor myself very often, especially when it comes to swear words (I'm working on it). If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to not read. I'm okay with that.

I love being a work from home mom to my one and only child, G. He is a dream that I never thought would come true. It's my goal in my life to raise him to be thoughtful, witty, respectful, gentle, sincere, creative, determined, instinctive, charming, frank, truculent, faithful, reflective, happy, active, bright, ambitious, talented, productive, decisive, kind hearted, friendly, proud, sarcastic, calm, righteous, generous, protective, dynamic, silly, adaptable, brave, honorable, gregarious, funny, fearless, outgoing, magnanimous, confident, cultured, fair and just plain amazing. It's not too tall an order, it's my life's work.

Ten on Thursday

1. What colour are your toenails painted?
BLACK! I was going to do black with lime green polka dots but I never got around to the polka dots.

2. What colour are your fingernails painted?
I can't handle having my fingernails painted. I keep trying it but take it off after a day or two.

3. What is your favourite brand of nail polish?
OPI when I can afford it!

4. As the norm, do you DIY your nails or get mani/pedis?
I do my own, I is too poor for manis & pedis!

5. Have you ever had a gel mani? Do you recommend it?
I don't even know what that is!

6. What is the last movie you watched on television? (TV, Netflix, Redbox, etc.)
Thomas & the Misty Island Rescue. Try not to be jealous. Tonight I tried to talk E into watching a movie that I have DVR'd but he turned me down and went to bed.

7. What is the last movie you watched in the cinema?
We took G to see Cars 2 for his birthday on opening day!

8. Is there a movie that everyone talks about as if it is a classic but you haven’t seen?
I can't think of any off the top of my head.

9. What is your favourite movie soundtrack?
Reality Bites.

10. Have you ever seen a movie and thought it was better than the book it was based on?
Not even one time. Most of the time when I read a book and love it I refuse to watch the movie just so that it can't ruin the book for me.

Zombie's and babies...

This is too dang funny (and true):

I remember those days of feeling like a zombie momma and I remember saying, "The baby ate my brain," or referring to pregnancy brain. Now I know why.

Don't shed a tear but look...

This first one is a picture of G from around May 2009 when we first moved up here, so right before he turned one year old. Here G is in July 2011 at 3 years old on the same stump. He grew a little huh?
Then this one is me and G on his first trip to the Lochsa when he was only a few weeks old in July 2008. Then the other one is us in our yard at our house on the Lochsa from the other day in July 2011. We both grew (I'm being literal and figurative).
It's a crazy kind of wonderful huh?!?

This parenting gig is HARD!

I knew it wouldn't be easy but this terrible 2's/tantrum 3's thing is an adventure! Every day is completely different and yet at the same time it feels like that movie Groundhogs Day, without Bill Murray here for comic relief.
Lately G has been very strong willed, more so than usual and it's really testing my patience and capabilities. When he gets told no he gets mad and usually picks up and throws whatever toy is nearest to him. Gee, that's fun. He'll approach me to hit me but restrains himself because he knows he'll get in trouble. He'll "tap" me but I treat it the same as him hitting me and he gets in trouble for it, since that's his intention anyway. Ooh and the "MINE!" is another good time to be had by all. I'm working on sharing and he's working on making me understand that he understands sharing and has absolutely no intention of doing it. The other day we were "sharing" a soda and when I asked for a drink he refused. When I took it from him he threw a screaming fit screaming, "MINE! MY SODA!" Good times.

When he's really in a mood I hear, "No way!" allllllll dayyyyyyy longgggggggg.
"Do you want a banana?"
"No way!"
"Do you want to watch Bob the Builder?"
"No way!"
"Do you want a poke in the eye with a sharp stick?"
"No way!"

You get the picture.

I love that he is so much more verbal now even if it means I hear things that I don't want to hear (such as no way or just the word no in general). G has started to mimic us, especially me, repeating things that I say almost a little too often. The other day this is what happened at our house:
Me: "Who farted? Crash? Get outta here you stink ass dog.
G: "Yeah, you stink ass."
Me: "Oh shit, no, buddy, momma said a bad word, don't say that word."
G: "Oh shit you stink ass."
Me: "Not that one either! Oh, momma screwed up, but don't say either of those again."
G: "Okay stink ass."

But then there are days where he listens and he follows directions and he's sweet and loving. I hear a lot of, "Yes momma," and, "Okay momma!" I like those days. I like it when he comes up to me and says, "Kiss? Hug?" And he wants to give me one of each. Or a kiss attack which I absolutely love!!! He wants to play with me, not just make me sit there and watch him play which is mind numbing because he freaks if I try to touch whatever he is playing with. These are also the days where we tend to get to do a lot more activities because he's being so well behaved. Like going for a hike, which is a pleasure on the good days because he's not constantly trying to run away or run up a game trail (which is what he does on the not so good days).

My most rewarding job? You betcha. My favorite job ever? Heck yeah. The only job where I've literally wanted to rip my hair out because of pure frustration? Oooh yeah. And the only job where I don't get "sick" or "vacation" time, let's not forget that. Ha!

Is he spoiled?

Yesterday in two completely different conversations with two people who don't even know each other, one who see's G a lot and one who see's G 2 or 3 times a year G was referred to as spoiled.
Is he spoiled?

He does have a lot of stuff but very, very few of it is something he's asked for. We buy him things because we want him to have things (or secretly because we want to play with them) and we appreciate that we can afford things.

Or is he spoiled because he gets all of our attention? Well that's because he's our only child at home, duh. Some have hinted that he is spoiled because he has the majority of my attention and because I'm very attached to him. Who the frig wouldn't be proud of being attached to their child? For heaven's sake!!!

Is he spoiled because he's been a brat, as one of those two people suggested? I didn't know that the two were mutually exclusive, I thought he was a brat because he's three years old, I don't see how that makes him spoiled. He doesn't throw a fit when he doesn't get something, he doesn't see something on TV and say, "I want that."

Or the other person insinuated that G is spoiled because I'm a work from home/stay at home momma. How the crap does that make him spoiled? Because I'm HERE, I'm present I'm spoiling him? Is this only ridiculous to me? Because I want to be a huge part of his life I'm spoiling him? How would our world change if more parents (moms or dads) got to stay home more with their children?

"Why do you let what people think about your kid bother you?"

In this regard I can't help it. I don't want my child to be a stereotyped spoiled kid. When he was a baby I firmly did, and still do, believe that babies can't be spoiled. Holding a baby a lot isn't spoiling them. Answering a baby's cries and attending to their every need isn't spoiling them. I used to say, "Milk spoils, babies do not."

But toddlers/little kids can be spoiled.

I guess it's open to interpretation but it kind of hurts my feelings that G is considered spoiled to some people. What can I do about it? Take away all his "stuff?" Go back to work so he doesn't get as much time with me? Neither of those things is going to happen (well we take away toys for disciplinary purposes and that is effective) so what else do I do? I wonder if people mean spoiled not in a negative way and I just take it like that? Parenting is hard enough without having to hear from others that we're doing it wrong.

Nightmares

G has woken up screaming for me or E the last few nights and when I get to him (or tell him to turn around because I'm in the bed in the same room as him) he holds onto my neck tightly until he falls asleep. But last night (or this morning I guess you'd call it since it was 4:30 am) when I ran to his room and scooped him up he said in a sleepy voice, "Skeeters get me. Rescue me momma, skeeters get me."

Now say it with me, "Aw!" I didn't realize that they were bugging (haha, get it?) him so much.

I know about night terrors but that isn't what these have been. What does a 3 year old experience that he would have nightmares about? Running out of PB for the PB&J? The cancellation of Bob the Builder? A plastics shortage at the toy factories in China?

Oh to be three again and have my momma save me from the monsters...

Heart's desire & logic don't always mix

I put myself out there, I admit it, so I deserved to hear the truth as at least one person sees it. Someone whose opinion means a lot to me told me that my reasons for having another baby are completely of my own agenda and have nothing to do with either E or G.

He didn't say it but in other words, I'm selfish.

Ouch.

"The choices we make are sometimes containing unintended consequences. We make a choice with one goal only to find we must accept certain consequences are attached to them. Just pointing out the obvious. I'm not against you having another child. I just want to point out that the motives for it are yours and yours alone. This is true even if you think you are doing him a favor. Some things won't change despite your attempts to make them otherwise. It's perfectly okay to be yourself, to be human. You simply need to be at peace with all the consequences - good and bad - of each of your decisions. I believe E loves you and wants you to be happy. He knows he won't be around for his child's life due to his age, health, etc. He thinks that would be selfish on his part to start a child's life in this world knowing he won't be there. He would only do it for you. You have to separate what you want from what is the right thing to do. I'm not saying not to have another, I'm simply telling you as someone who loves you that your logic is faulty and filled with your own agenda, not E's or G's wants and needs. Your decisions should be made with full acceptance of the consequences, not with the intent to change or manipulate these consequences later, especially to fulfill your own wants. Now you must live with only the interests of G and E in your heart and mind. That is the meaning of true love, which is what E appears to be doing - making a decision which he knows to be wrong on several fronts but designed to make you happy. He's living his life for something larger than himself. What a powerful example to follow. I will not be dishonest with you and I will always advocate for you and G. I also will be a friend to E as well. You know I have no problem being critical, even of myself, when I realize something is wrong. Don't hate me for talking openly. I will support you regardless of your decisions. It's not like I am above my weaknesses. I am frought with faults and it hurts to have them pointed out. Still, I would rather know it from someone who I know loves me than from anyone else."

Where do I go from here? It feels like my heart has been cut out and tromped on. Yes, it's true that I want to have another child. Yes, it's true that part of it is because I am scared that in 20 years I'm going to be completely alone. That is selfish. But giving G a sibling is not selfish and it is to his benefit. And I think that any amount of time that a second child gets with E is worth his or her life and the joy that it will bring to E's life. All of these things (his age, health, etc.) could have just as easily stopped us from having G and we did that without the same negative connotation that a second baby seems to be carrying.

Why does this have to be so hard? I do alright by G, don't I? I'm not a stellar mother but I love that child with every fiber of my being and I try to be a good mother. So why am I limited to only one child?

Sigh.

I'm an aunty again!

Well it's not my birth story to write but here's what happened from my vantage point.

I got the phone call from my little sister about 9 pm that my sis-in-law (herein referred to as SIL) was in the hospital as her labor had started (9 days past her due date). So I packed, finished my work, put G to bed, showered and hit the road by 10:30 Saturday night. I pulled in at about 1:30 am (don't tell E that I cut almost an hour off of the drive, ha!). Poor SIL was only dilated to a 4. They had broken her water at midnight and by like 3:30 am she was asking for the epi. I took a nap from about 4:30 until DH called me at 6:00 am to let me know that due to extenuating circumstances he was going to take the day off and stay with G instead of having my mom take him. Okay, that just meant that I'd have to turn around and go home but I wasn't about to drive in the dead of the night to turn around and leave! I told SIL (after we all got up at about 7 am and she was only 5 cm dilated) that I wasn't going anywhere unless she didn't really want me there. She said, "I understand if you need to go." I decided right there that no way was I going to miss this! I ended up falling asleep again for like an hour two (I honestly can't remember) and SIL had made only a little bit of progress.

SIL wasn't fully dilated until about 3 pm and she started pushing about then. She was so determined to get that baby out that she only took one 30 minute break in there. The midwife pretty much let her run the show and next thing we know SIL is pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing and pushing (I promise you that I'm not exaggerating. We can see enough of baby's head to see her hair (when midwife opened her up a little) but she just can't get baby out from under the pubic bone. She pushed for two hours before she kind of broke down and said, "I need help." So the midwife had given her the option (they had discussed options earlier) and she wanted to try the vacuum and not forceps. Midwives at that practice don't do those things so they have to call in the doctor and in the meantime SIL is still just trying and trying and pushing like a champ.
The doctor shows up and let's SIL know that she will only do four "pulls" with the vacuum and that if baby isn't out and shows signs that she's not tolerating it, we're headed for a c-section. SIL really, really, really wanted to avoid a c-section at all costs and she also had mentioned that she did NOT want an episiotomy, she would rather just tear. Doc puts the vacuum on and she's pulling and SIL is pushing. Next thing you know there's a loud POP and the vacuum comes shooting out and throws blood and gook on her face and in her hair. The doc and all the nurses jumped like they'd been bit so I'm guessing this popping thing does not happen too often. I found it awesome because right from the beginning I could tell I didn't like this doctor. The vacuum had popped off the baby's head (she's a hairy little girl!). The doc gives it 3 more pulls (one pull is continuous for the doctor while SIL is giving about 4 really good pushes on really strong contractions) and still no baby. Oh shit. So doc says that she's so close but baby is starting to not tolerate and SIL's BP is dropping. She's just got to get under that bone and by that time we could see the top of baby's head easily. SIL reiterated how much she didn't want to have a c-section.

Doc told her that she was so close and so she'd let her continue and that she'd try again with the vacuum. She lets SIL do some more pushing before she tries the vacuum again. On pull #5, before any of us can stop her and without her saying a word the doc frickin' whips out scissors and does an episiotomy. I had to put my hand on my brother's shoulder to stop him from going after the doc. It was so fast that it was literally a matter of, "What's done is done." He starts crying because he's so pissed (and scared) and I tell him, "Look at Lisa, focus on Lisa, you need to help her." SIL had no idea what had just happened.

On pull #6 out comes baby girl. Her head came out and the doc starts suctioning but SIL doesn't even really know that her head is out so she just goes right into another push and baby comes shooting out. It was kind of comical. Turns out baby girl was face up and canted to one side a little, that's why she had such a hard time. She had a major conehead but of course that's something that will correct itself!!! SO.MUCH.WORK but a beautiful end product. Baby girl (Brooklyn is her name because her momma was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY) was super dooper cone headed but nice and pink. Oh the celebration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! During the delivery I kept SIL's mother (who is in Brooklyn, NY) abreast with almost a blow by blow via SIL's iPhone and took pictures of everything. My brother was doing such a great job being attentive that I knew SIL was in capable hands and I just tried to keep the washcloth cold and on her forehead. It was the most beautiful disaster and I got to photograph it all to boot! My little sister (the one who is disabled and in a wheelchair and who will most likely never be able to have kids of her own) was at the foot of the bed watching it all, it was her first time seeing a real, live birth...she was SO flipping excited. She kept turning colors because she'd hold her breath every time SIL did during a push. But after baby came out and then SIL birthed the placenta my sister almost tossed her cookies. I wish I had had the camera trained on her because the look on her face was PRICELESS. It was so funny.

oooooooooooooooo......now I'm home and in a day or two I'll pack me and G up and go up there again to do some newborn pictures with my cutie niece and help them out, and the bonus is getting to stay at my little sister's apartment! She lives in the same apartment complex as my brother and SIL, just in a different building. G likes it there already because he knows there are train tracks to wander on and a playground! And of course he'll want to meet, "baby cousin Bwookwyn." That boy loves all babies so he's pretty excited about getting to meet her!

The experience has shown me that if I ever get to have another baby I'm going to go for the medically necessary, scheduled c-section again. The waiting, the pushing, the epi, this, that and the other thing - NO THANKS! I'll take my spinal block, cut open abdomen and perfectly round headed baby. It's not like I'll get to have much choice in the matter but for a little while I entertained the thought of a vaginal delivery. I am cured of that.

One and done? Or not done?

An interesting conversation came up between E & I the other day. A conversation about having another baby. He admitted that he's been thinking about it a lot but that he's struggling. It was nice to know that I'm not the only one struggling with that issue. This is going to get kind of personal in an emotional sense, not a physical one so hold on tight with me here. I really struggle when I think about G being an only child. I'm not an only child and I was raised in a very big extended family but we don't live by family so G doesn't get to have that. My brothers and sister are a part of almost every memory and they have been who I have turned to during different points in the last 2.5 years since we lost our dad (and in some ways our mom). Knowing that E isn't likely to be around when G is 30+ years old (it's just math and common sense, not morbid) makes me wonder how much harder it will be for G to not have a sibling to share memories with, to turn to in a time of need, etc.

And I also get selfish and consider the fact that once G finds the love of his life he'll be gone and he won't "need" his momma anymore. Yes, I understand he'll still always need his momma but not in the same way. And I am scared of being old and alone, I won't lie. Sure I might be blessed with grandkids but having only one child (and, yes, I'll say it...a boy for that matter) only means one daughter-in-law to love as my own way down the road. I don't really know how to explain it but I worry about how my relationship with G is going to change. Moms and their grown sons aren't even remotely as close as moms and their grown daughters. I've been paying attention and it holds true for every mother/son relationship I've seen. I'm not saying that I specifically want a daughter though.

Back to where I started, the topic came up thanks to a grouse. Ha! The grouse has a little flourish of red over his eyes (spruce grouse I think E told me) and E called it scarlet. "Scarlett is a great name for a little girl, hm, Scarlett Elizabeth, I like that." And E said, "Ooh, I really like that!" And so began the conversation. He told me that these are the points that he's stuck on.

Pros:
1. He doesn't want to hold me back from what I want and he knows I want another child.
2. He doesn't like the idea of G being an only child for a lot of reasons.

Cons:
1. He is afraid to play the odds again and possibly have an OI baby this time.
2. Because of his age he doesn't know if he can do "this" (meaning this bratty 2-3 year old stage) again.

His fears are wholly valid, we really lucked out with G and the OI issue. But at the same time, if my parents had been "afraid" in this way, I wouldn't be here. And then there's the fact that every parent should be so lucky to have an OI kid (in my humble opinion). It's daunting to think about your child getting hurt and breaking bones, of them having to go in for rodding or an IV infusion treatment, etc. Or of course all the little side conditions that OI typically doles out (such as my RA, my brothers profound hearing loss, etc.). But that fear is based on an IF and not fact. So do we play the OI lotto again and possibly come out on top with another OI-less baby?

I completely understand the fear of doing the bratty 2-3 year old stage again. G is a handful and then some. I'm only 33 years old and I feel too old to be trying to keep up with a "busy" kid. I have patience but only so much of it and E, I think most times, has less patience than I do! I have many a day where I am glad that there's only one child to "deal" with at these particularly rough parts of parenting. But then again we're talking about two years (tops, let's hope) of the brattiness out of 18 years of their life - so 1/9th seems like a drop in the bucket when you think about it.

His reasons for wanting another child are good ones too. He is right, I want another one. Something inside my heart just plain aches to get to be the momma to another kid. If I didn't know better I could swear that I hear the voice of a little angel saying, "Just once more, for me, please?" It really is something that I struggle with every day because I'm not getting any younger and neither is E.

And as for G having a sibling, I've done a lot of talking with adults who were only children and every one of them tells me, "I always wished for a brother or sister." I'm not biased, I have talked with plenty of parents who are one and done as well and they all have their reasoning for believing that it is just fine to only have one child. Mostly the one and done parents base their stance on money, which I never want to do because having a child should not be based on money (I'm speaking in the non-sensible way because yes children are expensive but why would a person say, "Do I want to buy a boat or have another kid?"). Children are priceless and money is not, simply put. Or they tell me that having only one meant that they could pour their love and attention onto their one child. But what if I feel like I have enough love and attention for two children?

G loves other children so, so much and he loves having playmates. I feel like we'd be doing him a disservice by not giving him a brother and sister to love and play with and grow up with.

But there is also the slight issue of the fact that E and I can't have a baby like normal people, we have to have help and that costs money. Again, in my mind money and babies aren't mutually exclusive and I push for them to be quite the opposite but it is what it is. We have to pay to get pregnant. Then nine months or so later comes a c-section and hospital bill. With G we had double coverage so his birth basically didn't cost us a thing. That won't be the case this second time around.

Now I understand by the phrase, "The clock is ticking." Not so much for me but because it's only going to be harder the older that E gets. But here's the thing, I'm on board and there's no question about that. I was pleased and surprised to find that E was even giving it some thought much less considering it.

Do I dare to get my hopes up and then have my heart broken? Or do I just dismiss the whole idea and learn to deal with the fact that I only get to be the momma to one child? I have a lot of proof that I make a pretty awesome kid, in case anyone wondered...
